When the Troubles officially began in 1969, Ireland launched itself into a devastating era of civil strife. For 30 years, Irish Nationalists and Northern Irish Loyalists fought each other for control of Belfast and the surrounding areas of Northern Ireland.

In 1969, Northern Ireland's leader, Britain, deployed a small portion of the military to restore law and order in Bogside and nearby areas.
1971
In 1971, Robert Curtis is the first British soldier to be shot and killed by the IRA. Late in 1971, 15 people are killed by the Ulster Volunteers in an attack on an Irish pub.
1972
Bloody Sunday occurs. 13 Catholic civilians protesting are shot and killed by British paratroopers. Public outcry is common. The IRA calls for a ceasefire in March. In July, the IRA bombs Belfast and kills 9 civilians when 22 bombs go off.
1974
In March, 22 individuals are killed in Dublin after several car bombs go off and 8 individuals are killed. In October, several pubs are bombed on mainland Britain by the IRA.
1976
Christopher Ewart Biggs, the British ambassador to Ireland, is killed in a carbomb attack.
1979
The Queen's cousin is killed in a bomb attack while on his boat. In April, Bobby Sands goes on a hunger strike and is elected into parliament. He died one month later.
1985
In November, Margaret Thatcher and Garret FitzGerald sign the Anglo-Irish agreement, leading to cooperation between the governments.
1987
11 people are killed by an IRA bomb attack in November.
1989
11 soldiers are killed in a bomb attack outside of a school.
1998
In April, the Good Friday agreement is signed, marking the unofficial end of the Troubles. Afterwards, in August, 29 people are killed in a carbomb attack by the IRA.
